Anthropic adds Docs and Slides tools to Claude, merging chat and productivity features

Anthropic is launching Claude Docs and Slides, enabling users to create and edit documents and presentations directly within Claude chats. The update also consolidates regular chats and Cowork into a single interface, making all productivity tools accessible from any conversation. These beta features support real-time collaboration, sharing, and export, positioning Claude as a competitor to Google's Gemini productivity suite.
The new Docs and Slides tools operate within Claude's chat interface, allowing users to generate, revise, and manually edit documents and presentations. These files begin as private but can be shared with other editors for simultaneous collaboration, with comment threads similar to those found in Google's document platform. All created content—whether from Docs, Slides, or the existing Design tool—is accessible through a single shareable link that works on mobile devices.
The interface consolidation means Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile will see the unified experience roll out over the coming weeks, with Team and Free tiers following later. Anthropic positions this as a seamless transition requiring no user action, while noting that standard chat functionality remains available. This move directly challenges Google's advantage of having Gemini natively embedded across its productivity suite.
The integration of document creation directly into Claude's chat interface could shift how knowledge workers approach productivity tasks, potentially reducing reliance on separate tools like Google Workspace. Users who already depend on Claude for analysis or writing may find fewer reasons to switch contexts, while teams could adopt Claude as a central collaboration hub. However, this also raises questions about data handling and workflow lock-in, as organizations weigh the convenience of consolidated AI tools against the risks of depending on a single platform for both communication and document production.
